The new cultural policy directions taken by the Nord Department.

As one of the main players in the department's cultural life, the Nord "General Council" has adopted an ambitious cultural policy.

Apart from its two compulsory functions as the custodian of the department's archives and public libraries, the Nord department has extended its scope of action to other areas: supporting projects covering the arts and culture in general, supporting local heritage in all dimensions, coordinating cultural actions for schoolchildren, people with disabilities, etc., aiding the development of themed museums and providing expertise and physical capacity in the field of archaeology, in order to develop and promote an open and innovative cultural policy.

It aims to consolidate and aid the cultural development of the Nord department by :

  • supporting local development projects with a cultural dimension,
  • developing the tools for ensuring a good balance of cultural amenities across the territory,
  • improved support for local cultural development,
  • cultural networking.

It aims to be the vehicle of culture. This is why it has focused its efforts on offering a broader and more diversified access to culture to the entire population of the Nord by :

  • pursuing its actions in the field of literacy and reading by increasing its support of the use of new technologies,
  • developing and structuring cultural activities for secondary school children and young people,
  • favouring access to artistic and cultural amenities for less advantaged communities (the elderly, people with disabilities, social problems, etc.),
  • developing even further the competencies of our cultural project coordinators,
  • supporting amateur groups for their contribution to personal fulfilment and the development of social ties.

It promotes the cultural and artistic assets and the heritage of the region and supports contemporary arts in the region. Through this, it aims to :

  • acknowledge and promote local initiatives in the Arts,
  • project a demanding and ambitious image of the Nord, through the development of the six museums it supports,
  • favour innovative artistic and cultural events in areas and communities otherwise little exposed to culture,
  • facililtate the reacquisition of knowledge about our heritage and its repossession through its restoration and the development of new activities and uses,
  • promote Science as a culture of equal value to the Arts and Heritage.

The department's cultural amenities.

To meet these objectives, the Nord General Council has specifically developed 6 key sites around the department :
